About me

Welcome to my DX blog!

My name is Mikko and I am analytics consultant living in Helsinki. In October 2020, I rediscovered my dear hobby from 1980s – DX listening.

Distant radio stations provided me an opportunity to virtually travel around the world, to return to cities I’ve visited in all these years, practice foreign languages and make new friends. After everything we experienced in 2020, I was finally able to cross the physical borders and stay home at the same time.

I was hooked almost immediately. It feels great to be back!

Many things have changed in DX since I quit the hobby in early 1990s. The modern digital receivers are so much better than what we had 30+ years ago, most foreign services are silent and there are very few high power medium wave transmitters in Europe.

This means it is easier than ever to hear distant local radio stations on the AM band!

Unless you happen to live in a city surrounded by laptops, digital TVs, wifi networks and all kinds of noise-creating home appliances. Luckily, The Finnish DX Association decided to buy several Kiwi SDR receivers located in different areas in Finland. Now I can actually hear all those weak signals while still using a receiver in Finland!

The receivers I mostly use:

  • Iitti – with a Double KAZ antenna (310 degrees NW)
  • Lohja – with a 400 metres long beverage antenna (330 degrees NW)

And occasionally some other Kiwis in Finland.
